It’s important to re-fuel every morning with the right type of breakfast. One of my go-to breakfast options is whole grain cereal. It can become frustrating trying to find one without a ton of added sugar. Luckily, there are several healthy options on the market including Uncle Sam.

Finding the Right Cereal

Finding the right combo of healthy and delicious is possible. Look for a cereal with at least 3 grams of fiber  per serving and little sugar as possible. Always check the ingredient list.  If sugar is listed as the first 3 ingredients it means that the cereal is mostly sugar by weight. Sugar should be be listed at least as the 4th ingredient — the further down, the better. The ingredient list may not list “sugar” but rather a sugar alternative like high fructose corn syrup, honey or maple syrup.

For portion, aim for 150 to 200 calories per serving. Be sure to read how many calories per serving size as the amount is different for each cereal.

The Benefits

The USDA recommends making half your grains whole. Start your day with a whole grain cereal and you’re on your way to meet these guidelines.

Whole grain cereal is also high in fiber. Most Americans get less than half the recommended 25-35 grams of fiber each day. Fiber helps improve heart health, aids with digestion, keeps you regular, and helps stabilize blood sugar. It’s also helps keep you full for longer– an advantage for those trying to lose weight.

I still have not tried this brand and keep hearing such great things about it. I typically eat cereal over plain Greek yogurt with cinnamon, stevia, and banana.

My favorite way to eat cereal that is also creative is to coat grouper in an original flavor, like Uncle Sam Original, and bake in the oven. Faux fried fish with a fiber boost!
