Kids in the Kitchen: Italian Style

Getting kids into the kitchen is one of my passions, so I was thrilled when I was asked to be a part of “Eat Healthy & Speak Italian” Cooking Series. The cooking classes teach kids how to make healthy, traditional pasta dishes from scratch—my mouth is watering just reading the class description!

Italian Cooking Classes
Cooking classes are held at The International Culinary Center in New York where professional chef’s show kids (ages 10-16) how to choose healthy and fresh ingredients and incorporate them into delicious pasta dishes. Some of the recipes being prepared include Barilla® Whole Grain Rotini with Braised Fennel, Carrots and Spring Onions and Barilla® Whole Grain Spaghetti with Fresh Vegetables. During the classes, students also learn Italian culinary words and phrases—making it a more authentic and fun experience.

The Double Pyramid

The kiddos also learn about the Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition’s Double Pyramid—a tool that promotes a healthy diet based on the Mediterranean lifestyle.

The Double Pyramid is a play on the traditional food pyramid you’re probably used to. The only difference is the double pyramid focuses on Mediterranean-based foods along with the well-being of our environment.

The left pyramid (AKA food pyramid) recommends veggies, fruits, nuts, grains and olive oil as the base of your diet. The right upside-down pyramid (AKA environmental pyramid) shows the foods that have the heaviest impact on the environment at the top—such as beef and cheese. Those foods leaving a lighter ecological footprint—like fruits, veggies, and whole grains—are at the bottom.

The Message
I love getting my kids down and dirty in the kitchen and am excited to see other programs focused on doing the same. Teaching kids about food, cooking, and the environment helps develop lifelong healthy habits. Educating your kids with hands-on practical experience doesn’t have to be complicated. Take a trip to the market and name the fruits and veggies or make a simple salad together at home.
