A Look Back At 2012

From the hottest trends to delicious recipes to educating my kids about food, this has been a very exciting year! I’m lucky enough to be able to write about all these topics through various outlets including FoodNetwork.com Healthy Eats Blog, Sears Fitstudio.com and my own blog. Here’s a look back some of my favorites.

Hot Topics
Controversial food and nutrition topics come and go each year. In 2012 many folks learned that we’re eating more added sugar that recommended from some surprising sources. The lowdown on artificial sweeteners also hit home, especially for folks who use them regularly.

The childhood obesity epidemic was also widely discussed this year. Dining out with kids can be frustrating with high calorie meals commonly offered, but using my tips can help you overcome the seemingly impossible. Another important part of a kids diet is healthy snacks, but it takes a little practice to find creative snacks that still provide the nutrition your little ones need.

Other interesting topics include Dr. Katz’s Nuval rating system, being prepared for a power outage (care of Sandy), recommendations to drink chocolate milk post-workout (I explain why!), and the notorious Wheat Belly Diet.

Delicious Recipes
Delicious and healthy go hand-in-hand. Here are some recipes I developed this year:

Family Style
Nutrition education is an integral part of my children’s education. This year I documented a summer outing to my local farmer’s market, a family apple and pumpkin picking trip, cooking with my little girls, and how to eat healthy while on a ski vacation.

Early this year I went to my daughter’s nursery class to talk about fruits and veggies.  I also had an unfortunate run in with emergency room food when my son was rushed to the hospital early in 2012 which was an eye-opening experience.

Personal Achievements
I’ve also had some personal achievements and trips that were very exciting. I gave two presentations at the Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was invited on a wonderful mommy blogger trip to the California Strawberry fields. I was also thrilled to be featured by Oldways as the “dietitian of the day” during Mediterranean month.

TELL ME: What’s your most memorable nutrition or food moment in 2012?
