5 Healthy Eating Apps to Keep Your Diet on Track

The holiday season is quickly approaching and while this time of the year is fun and exciting, it can be hard to stick to your normal routine with all the parties, shopping, and other things to do.  We’ve grown to rely on our smart phones for basically everything, so why not use it to help keep eating habits in check?

Why Apps?
Our smart phones can help us to stay accountable, which can be heaven sent when schedules become hectic.  With the touch of an app, your phone can search for and share healthy recipes, help navigate grocery store shelves, restaurant menus, or locate places for a wholesome meal or snack.  There are hundreds of apps available that are geared toward food, health, and nutrition, and it can be hard to know which are useful.  Below are some of my favorite food and healthy eating apps.
5 Apps for Healthy Eating

Fooducate
This app helps users navigate grocery aisles and packaged foods by providing a grade for each food that takes into account the food’s nutrients, ingredients, and the amount of processing.  It also lets you compare products, highlights less healthy ingredients, gives ideas for healthier alternatives, and provides fun food facts.  Fooducate’s health tracker feature allows users to track their food intake and exercise each day.  App available for free download on Android and iPhone.

Harvest
Harvest is a guide for fresh produce.  This app helps users identify seasonal produce, provides tips for selecting and storing fruits and veggies, and gives details on pesticide levels for fresh produce.  App available for download for $1.99 on iPhone.

Kids LiveWell
This app is your answer to healthy kids’ meals away from home.  Kids LiveWell helps pinpoint healthy kids’ meal options at tons of restaurants across the country that highlight whole grains, lean protein, and lowfat dairy.  Although this app is focuses on kids’ meals, it can also be used as a guide for making healthier choices for adults.  App available for free download on iPhone.

Food Tripping
This app helps you find local food options no matter where you are.  Food Tripping uses your phone’s location services feature to find places to eat which are close in proximity and focuses on those who emphasize local foods, like farmers’ markets, restaurants, coffee shops, and other specialty and artisanal food spots.  App available for free download on iPhone.

Cooking Light Quick and Healthy Menu Maker
This app is everything you’d expect from the popular Cooking Light magazine and more.  It helps you to plan a healthy meal or choose a suggested meal idea (entrée, side, and dessert included).   Nutrition facts for all recipes and menus are available.  And a bonus with this app are the drool-worthy photos!  App available for download for $3.99 on iPhone and iPad.
