Fueling a Healthy Family: Celebrate National Kids Eat Right Month!

The month of August signifies many celebrations including National Water Quality Month, National Immunization Awareness Month, National Family Fun Month, and National Golf Month. Starting this year, August will now also be National Kids Eat Right Month—an effort from the Kids Eat Right Campaign to promote and celebrate its mission to end childhood obesity in America.

Fostering Healthy Families
As children gear-up for the school year, the timing of National Kids Eat Right month could not be more perfect. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics “the month will focus on the importance of healthful eating and active lifestyles for children and families, featuring expert advice from registered dietitian nutritionists.”

National Kids Eat Right Month also hopes to raise awareness of the hunger-overweight paradox, where children appear overweight or obese by weight, though in reality are hungry and likely undernourished. Unfortunately, this issue primarily occurs among families that lack the sufficient funds or access to safe and healthy foods.

Kids Eat Right in Action
Legislative and public policy efforts are top on the agenda for Kids Eat Right to address these issues in the food environment.

Another great resource is the USDA’s ChooseMyPlate website, which now has a new feature called “Healthy Eating on a Budget” to help with all aspects of food planning, shopping, and cooking! Especially useful is its Shop Smart to Fill Your Cart tool, which explains unit pricing, and provides tricks for shopping smart in the grocery store.
