Raw beef and vegetables

By Toby Amidor, MS, RDN

It seems you can get just about anything delivered to your front door these days and meat is no exception. There are several companies offering subscription services, where a month’s supply of meat will automatically be delivered to your doorstep each month. Think of it like a CSA delivery of fruits and veggies, but instead of produce, you get different cuts of meat each month. Most companies that provide this service offer grass-fed beef and pasture-raised or organic chicken that is hand picked from reputable farms. So not only is it convenient, but the quality may be better than what you can find at your local store.

While I’m “pro-choice” about the type of meat that best suits your family and budget (grass-fed, organic, conventional), I do think a meat delivery service could be helpful if your local grocery store doesn’t have the freshest options available or if getting to the store isn’t always convenient. It may also expand your normal meat options, since your box may contain cuts that you wouldn’t normally find or purchase at the store. And some companies provide recipes in the box, which may enhance your cooking skills! One thing to remember is that the quantity of meat may be more than you need, especially if you are cooking for one or two, so stick to about a 4-ounce serving per meal.

If this sounds like something you’d like to try, here are three companies to check out:
