19 Mar NASDAQ Honors National Nutrition Month
This morning I was thrilled to be a part of the opening bell ceremony for NASDAQ in honor of National Nutrition Month. This wonderful occasion helps showcase the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) and over 70,000 of its wonderful members.
About 15 dietitians from the New York area were on hand for this year’s ceremony. AND President Ethan Bergman, PhD, RD, CD, FADA gave a brief speech explaining some of the recent changes that have taken place in the AND. One big change is that registered dietitians are now able to use the credentials RDN (registered dietitian nutritionist) to indicate that they are both dietitians and nutritionist. This step was taken to differentiate between those who are nutritionists but not registered dietitians. Registered dietitians go through intensive training, education, and testing to receive their credentials.
March also marks the 40th anniversary of National Nutrition Month. This year’s theme is “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day” which encourages eating healthfully based on your own food choices and preferences. It aims to overcome the misperception that eating healthfully means giving up your favorite foods. Instead, everyone is encouraged to create a healthy eating plan tailored to their individual lifestyle, traditions, health concerns, and taste preferences.
Next comes the fun part! All the dietitians on hand gathered up on the NASDAQ podium and counted down until it was time for AND President Ethan Bergman to ring the bell. Dietitians on hand included Tomoko Okada, Renya Franko, Deborah Malkoff, Matt Nutly, Melissa Prescott, Judith Gilbride, Veronica McLymont, and several representatives from the Greater New York Dietetic Association (GNYDA). You can view the video on the NASDAQ website.
