18 Aug 5 Farmer’s Market Picks
By Stephanie Perruzza MS, RD, Contributing Blogger
When summer hits one of my favorite Saturday morning activities is heading to my local farmer’s market. I love tasting, dipping and sipping items at every tent in hopes of finding something new. Eating locally and seasonally is good for you and the environment because these fresh, wholesome ingredients haven’t traveled far distances to reach you.
Whether you’re looking for meats, baked goods or fresh produce you’ll never leave a farmer’s market with an empty bag. If you haven’t had the chance to check out your local market, below are five reasons why you should– plus, your taste buds will thank me later!
#1 Local Honey (pictured above)
Local honey is a usual staple at many farmers’ markets. You can find great flavors like wildflower, citrus or lavender blossom. I love stocking up on the honey straws for my afternoon tea!
#2 Hard Cider
I was so excited to try this because I love warm apple cider in the winter. Hard cider, differing from apple cider, is a fermented alcoholic beverage made from a combination of apples and yeast. Its alcohol percentage ranges between 4 to 8 percent. I had a sampling of the original hard cider, which had a delicate yet very refreshing flavor. Other sample flavors included sour cherry, raspberry and pear.
#3 Sweet & Sour Cherries
Cherries are in season so look for both varieties at your farmer’s market. Sweet cherries are great for snacking and sour or tart cherries for baking. They’re also a nutrition powerhouse containing vitamins A and C and anthocyanins, a powerful antioxidant.
#4 Select Spreads
There’s nothing better than a sweet, chunky homemade jam spread on top of a warm slice of baked bread. Locally sourced handmade jams, preserves and applesauce are the perfect secret ingredient in your favorite dishes. In addition to sweet varieties, you can find savory and spicy flavors like hot red chili pepper.
#5 Savory Yogurt Toppings
As a change-up from fruit on your breakfast yogurt, now you can top with an everything bagel flavor infused olive oil. Savory oils mixed with nuts, seeds, veggies and spices are now making their way into the yogurt-topping scene. Pick some up and try on top of plain Greek yogurt for breakfast or blended into a dip.
