20 Jan Tackle Your Tailgating Appetizers
By Sheridan Jonas, Contributing Blogger
Appetizers can be a source of sneaky extra calories, and many are high in saturated fat, calories, and sodium. Because we have a tendency to consume food that is in our line of sight, it’s very easy to eat a few too many appetizers at any tailgating party. That’s why it’s important to have a game-day plan for attacking the snack table. Follow these tips to keep your health in check at your next tailgating event.
Tailgating Appetizer Tips
- Many tailgating parties will have a fruit or vegetable platter as one of the appetizer options. Stick to these platters if you have a tendency to mindlessly eat while watching the game.
- Be choosey with your dips. Dips with a cream bases (like spinach artichoke and blue cheese) can be very high in calories. Stick to dips like hummus, salsa, or a yogurt-based dip for a lower calorie option.
- Eat before you come. Having a snack or small meal before you get to the party will prevent you from overeating too many high calorie apps.
- Offer to bring your own homemade healthy appetizer option, like any of the recipes below.
