5 Healthy Hummus Hacks

When was a girl, my summers were spent in Israel in the small town of Ashkelon where my mom is from. As my mom toted 5 kids with her from New York to Israel, hotels were not really an option so she rented a two-bedroom apartment where we lived among the locals. My mom and I visited the supermarket and farmers’ type market several times a week bringing home meats, fresh produce, warm pita, and always a tub or two of hummus. As the years went on and I had a family of my own, hummus remained in my healthy eating repertoire.

The Nutritional Low Down
Although I grew up on hummus, as a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) I recommend it in many different ways because it is so nutrient-packed. Two heaping spoonfuls of Sabra hummus provides about ¼ cup of chickpeas, which is equivalent to ½ serving of your daily recommended amount of veggies. It also contains healthy unsaturated fat, which was a key recommendation of the 2015 dietary guidelines for Americans—that is to focus on type of fats you eat as opposed to your total fat.

Two tablespoons of the Original Sabra hummus contains 70 calories, 2 grams of protein, 5 grams of fat, 1 gram of saturated fat, and 1 gram of fiber. It also contains a bit of iron and calcium and is free of sugar and cholesterol.

5 Ways To Enjoy Hummus

Everyone loves dipping fresh cut vegetables in hummus, but there are many more ways to enjoy its flavor. Here are my top 5:

#1: With a salad

I love starting my mornings off with my Israeli-Style Chopped Salad and 2 tablespoons of hummus. Some mornings I ever stuff the salad and hummus into a whole wheat pita. Add a slice of mozzarella cheese, and you’ve got a healthy dose of 3 food groups in one meal.


#2: With grilled vegetables
Hummus compliments the flavor of grilled vegetables fabulously. I enjoy dipping my Grilled Vegetable Skewers into hummus for a boost in protein and healthy fat.

#3: With eggs
Top scrambled or easy-over eggs with hummus and serve with grilled vegetables or fruit on the side.

#4: On pizza
Instead of using tomato sauce for homemade pizza, spread hummus over the dough and cover with vegetables like green peppers, tomatoes,  red onions, and olives, and sprinkle with feta chees
