The first step to eating and feeling better begins with what you put in your grocery cart. Theoretically, if you choose better-for-you foods at the market, you’ll cook and eat more nutritious meals at home. Although it sounds simple, making those better choices can be challenging! In fact, despite our best intentions and motivation to be healthy, grocery shopping can be a time-consuming and frustrating experience. So, instead of taking laps around the store or spending time dissecting and comparing product labels, here’s an app that does it all (and more)!

What’s Fooducate?
Fooducate is an app that’s designed to help you not only achieve your health goals, but to also facilitate long term, lifestyle changes. CEO and founder of Fooducate, Hemi Weingarten, says the app “provides tools to help people make long lasting change: a calorie counter focusing on calorie quality, a food lookup tool to help avoid unhealthy groceries, a community of likeminded individuals to provide support and advice, and daily tips as well”.

Hello Added Sugar!
As if that’s not enough to get you started, Fooducate just released a new, exciting feature. It now provides the amount of added sugar in each food. Whole, unprocessed foods don’t contain these sugars. Food manufacturer’s add sugar to processed and packaged items to help enhance their flavor. Large amounts of added sugars have been strongly correlated long-term obesity and diabetes complications. Consuming natural sugars such as those found in fruits and dairy on the other hand, are filled with beneficial nutrients like vitamins, minerals and fiber, making them an important part of a healthy diet.

Since the amount of sugar added to foods is not yet provided on food labels, Americans have no clue how much sugar they’re consuming. Although the FDA recently proposed to include added sugars to food labels, the creators of Fooducate felt consumers needed this information now to help them make better food choices. This, however, was no easy feat! Since food manufacturers aren’t required to list the amount of added sugars in foods, Fooducate teamed up with top experts in the field of nutrition and food science. Weingarten states that research was conducted by experts “by analyzing the product ingredient lists, looking at each ingredient and evaluating its sugar content, then adding up all the sugars from all the ingredients into one sum.” In addition to providing the amount of added sugar for each food, the app also lists healthier alternatives that contain less added sugar.
