30 Mar 31 Days of Healthy Eating: Tip 30 from Zipporah Oksman (yes, Toby’s mom is a RD!)
Happy National Nutrition Month! In honor of day 30 I asked my mom and fellow registered dietitian to contribute a healthy eating tip. My mom and I attending nutrition school at New York University together and graduated with our master’s degree on the same day (my dad was very proud and his wallet relieved, to say the least). My mom, Zipporah, reminds us that spending time together as a family in the kitchen and at the table is important. Enjoy her tip!
Eat Healthy Together
The first step to eating healthier together is to set aside a time during the week when the family can all sit down at the table. Then get the kids involved every step of the way from choosing the menu to food shopping to preparing the menu.
Have the kids go through healthy cookbooks and choose recipes. Next hit the markets. Introduce your kids to farmers markets, local farms, or even a local fish market so they understand a little more about where their food comes from. You can also grow your own vegetables or herbs. If you don’t have a yard to plant a garden, use window boxes or sills or a patio to plant some herbs or tomato plant that they can nurture and collect to eat.
Once you start preparing, have the kids do age-appropriate tasks (younger kids can help measure, while older kids can chop or cook stove top with supervision).
