For day 6 of National Nutrition Month, Elizabeth Ward, MS, RD was kind enough to provide a copy of her book Expect the Best: Your Guide to Healthy Eating Before, During & After Pregnancy. The book explains why it’s important for both the man and woman should be at a healthy weight and eat healthfully before conceiving and discusses how to lose weight safely post pregnancy. It’s perfect for anyone who is preparing for a pregnancy in the near future, including my future sister-in-law!

Liz was kind enough to share a quick and easy recipe from her book. I know when I was pregnant with my three kids, cold smoothies was always my go-to way to take in nutrient-rich foods especially when I experience morning sickness!

Cherry-Banana Cooler

Cherry Banana CoolerMakes 2 servings.

Preparation Time: 2 minutes
Total time: 5 minutes

1 medium frozen banana, peeled
¾ cup frozen sweet cherries, pitted
¾ cup plain fat-free Greek yogurt
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 tablespoon milk (optional)

Place all the ingredients except the milk in a food processor or blender and process on high speed until smooth, about 45 seconds to 1 minute. Add milk for a thinner consistency, if desired. Pour into a tall glass and drink immediately.
