10 Mar 31 Days of Global Flavors for National Nutrition Month: Day 10
It’s Day 10 of National Nutrition Month! Today’s global flavor comes from registered dietitian YuHan Huang.
Five-Spice Powder
Five-spice powder can include various types of spices and the most common ones include Sichuan pepper, cinnamon, star anise, cloves, and fennel seeds. The origin of five-spice powder is unknown, but it has been a common spice across Asia. I love this versatile spice because it can give an additional flavor to many leafy vegetables or be used as a marinating spice for poultry, pork, and seafood.

I use five-spice powder as a flavor-boosting spice in various meat and vegetable dishes to add flavor without adding more salt. Below is my recipe for Five-Spice Marinated Shrimp Recipe with Bok Choy:
Marinate shrimp with five-spice powder and soy sauce for 30 minutes. Take the shrimp and sauté in the olive oil until cooked, then transfer the cooked shrimp to another plate to avoid overcooking. Then add the chopped bok choy in the hot skillet with grated ginger, crushed garlic, salt, and white pepper. Stir until bok choy is cooked and slowly add the shrimp back to the pan. Garnish with chopped cilantro, and serve over rice.
