Win This Cereal: Puffins

Win This Cereal: Puffins

Cereal is one of the most popular breakfast options among Americans. But many cereals are loaded with sugar, artificial coloring and flavoring and very little fiber and other good-for-you nutrients. If you’re a cereal lover, make sure you’re picking the right cereal then enter to win one of my favorites Barbara’s Puffins.

Choosing the Right Cereal
Many cereals on the market contain loads of sugar and very little fiber, which leaves you with a morning sugar rush and famished an hour after breakfast. To make sure you’re making a healthy choice, read the ingredient list.

One of the first things I look at when perusing the nutrition facts panel on a cereal box is the fiber content. Fiber aids in satiety, meaning it will keep you fuller longer. I aim for at least 3 grams per serving.

Sugar overload is another big concern—especially since many folks take in too much added sugar. For cereals, ideally I recommend to look for 5 grams or less of sugar per serving.

Serving size varies from cereal to cereal from ½ cup to about 1 cup with many folks pouring 4-5 times the amount in one sitting. The amount you should have in one meal really depends on your calorie needs— pouring 1-2 times the serving size, adding nonfat or 1% milk plus fresh fruit on the side will make a nicely balanced meal.

Pass the Puffins!
All varieties of Barbara’s Puffins contain at least 3 grams of fiber in each serving. They’re also wheat free, with the fiber coming from corn, oats and whole grain rice flour. Both the Honey Rice and Multigrain are gluten-free. The sugar varies from 5 to 7 grams per serving.

You also won’t find trans fat, artificial flavors, artificial additives, refined white sugar or high fructose corn syrup in any of Barbara’s products, which will make you feel good feeding it to your family.

How To Enjoy Puffins
Adults and kids alike will enjoy these cereals. My kids are always adding the Original variety to the shopping cart while I prefer the Multigrain. You can enjoy them the old fashioned way in a bowl with your choice of non or low fat milk or munch on a handful as a midafternoon or pre-workout snack. They’re also a great addition to yogurt or combined with nuts and dried fruit for a homemade trail mix.

My favorite way to eat cereal is either right out of the box or sprinkled on top of some yogurt! I rarely have a bowl of cereal with milk anymore.. where’s the fun in that?!

I love eating 1/2 cup of cereal (and yes Peanut Butter Puffins are a FAVE) with 1/2 cup of nofat Greek yogurt or Kefir, fresh berries, and a little Stevia or honey plus cinnamon. So so good and the perfect mix of protein and good carbs!

I love Puffins, especially the cinnamon flavor. I mix two varieties of cereal, add berries (fresh if in season, frozen/thawed if not) add nonfat milk and enjoy! Cinnamon Puffins are also great as a snack by themselves when I’m craving something crunchy. A better alternative to chips!
